Faith Girl! How Janie Charlot is Taking Entrepreneurship to a Higher Level
Tell us your story and what inspired you to start NPs Hired, LLC ?
I came from humble beginnings and becoming a nurse was not my first choice. I was raised by a single mother in Church Point, a small town in South Louisiana. She worked as a nurses aide making no more than 10K per year but made up for the lack of money with a lot of love.
At an early age I knew that I had a gift from God to contribute great things to this world because I performed well in school and graduated at the top of my high school class. I felt going to college to become a Pharmacist was my ticket out of my socioeconomic environment. I enrolled at the University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM) to pursue this field but had to change my major to nursing when I did not get accepted into the Pharmacy program. That change felt right, and I continued the path to become a nurse. However, I wanted more. I wanted to fulfill my desire to be my authentic self and again, contribute my part to this world. This is what inspired me to establish NP’s Hired, LLC . I have the freedom to bring innovation to the healthcare field, direct my creativity, and passion to do it at my own pace and on my own terms.
“Believe in yourself, believe in your company, and believe in what you can offer the world. If your heart is in the right place, growth will surely come. “
What types of services or products do you offer?
We are an Atlanta-based company that provides healthcare services nationally and internationally. We use technology to provide various services such as medical consultations, treatment of minor conditions and follow-up to management of chronic illnesses. Our mobile services include health promotion and education, speaking engagements, and weight-loss coaching and management. We have also partnered with various schools and other health professionals in metro Atlanta to perform sports physicals and specialty services, respectively.
How does an NP entrepreneur who may not see the immediate results of a new business prepare for the growth?
Preparing for growth requires patience, passion, and a love for what you do despite the results! This is often the difference between a business that succeeds or fails. Be willing to re-branding and understand that it is ok to try something if something did not work. Believe in yourself, believe in your company, and believe in what you can offer the world. If your heart is in the right place, growth will surely come.
What was the biggest challenge you faced with launching your business? What steps did you take to propel forward?
When I was in nursing, we were not given a class on how to sustain a profitable business. We were only taught how to save lives. Therefore, I encountered oppositions that were general concerns one would anticipate when starting a business. This includes start-up cost, malpractice insurance, marketing and promotion, the lack of financial resources, the need to cover your own healthcare benefits, funding your own retirement plan, and adhering to collaborative practice laws. I also dealt with criticism from others and my own fears. And fears can be a thief of pursuing dreams and aspirations. I had the support of great mentors who, I felt were God sent, helped me maneuver through some rough patches. Today, I still have mentors who help me whenever a challenge arise.
What type of qualities are needed to be successful in business?
To be successful, in any business, it takes many qualities but consistency in these qualities are key. And, most of these qualities are transferable from working in practice. Here are the top qualities I feel one needs to be a successful entrepreneur:
- Interpersonal skills
- Creativity (the ability to merge nursing skills with business skills)
- Discipline (time-management)
- Knowlege-Seeker (be open-minded to learn about business)
At NP Student, we understand that many lessons are revealed as one takes risks to start a business. For this reason, we ask all of our guests to complete this statement, “If I only knew then…” to encourage readers that growth comes from learning from one’s mistakes.
If only I knew then that NP’s Hired, LLC would allow me to bridge the gap in healthcare and pursue my passion on my own terms, I wouldn’t have wasted any time trying to go to Pharmacy school! I have had the opportunity to change and save lives breaking down barriers to care. I have learned valuable lessons about determination, resiliency, and most importantly understanding that GOD determines our destined path.
